Are We Really Free?

The country is celebrating Independence Day today—a day to celebrate freedom.

But are we really free?

The recent news of the gang rape of a medico in Kolkata has left all of us shaken to the core. We have been listening to news about the atrocities that women of all ages face almost every day now. And yet, the incidents keep increasing, the restrictions on women keep growing, and their safety keeps reducing.

Where are we headed? And yet, we consider ourselves a free country.

What freedom is this where we have to think multiple times before stepping out? What freedom is this where we have to stop ourselves from dressing up the way we want to? What freedom is this where almost always, it is women who are blamed for whatever happens?

The Constitution of India talks about the fundamental rights of every citizen of India. But do we ACTUALLY have these rights?

It is only in books that they say that men and women are equal. But we all know the reality.

We have been given the freedom of expression, but we have to think a hundred times before voicing out our opinions and thoughts. We cannot speak our minds, unfiltered. Can we?

So we need to ask ourselves this question: Are we really “free”?

  1. No we are not… We are all good at boasting and showing off our irrelevant achievements of the country, and compare ourselves with lesser developed countries when instead our competitors are way ahead, both socially and economical. And then there is SAFETY of our citizens, especially women. Our politicians are just busy in demanding HAR GHAR TIRANGA, BIKE RIDE etc etc etc… We are leaving in a pathetic state at present where there lies NO HOPE not even FALSE HOPE and dare i say this.

  2. Rightly you have raised your voice against the shocking incident which strikes terror in the minds of all the girls and mothers..

Sadly, it is still a male dominated society..
