The Bespectacled Girl and Her (Supposed) Green Thumb (TBG #8)

The Bespectacled Girl has many dreams.

One of them is to build a beautiful home garden.

She has spent countless hours on Pinterest sighing over photographs of cosy balconies overflowing with plants and herb gardens.

She dreams of becoming a plant mom.

There is one slight problem.

She cannot, for the life of her, keep plants alive.

The chain of events is almost identical every single time.

She begins responsibly.

She spends hours researching the best indoor plants. Reads books on plants. Makes elaborate notes on sunlight exposure, soil types, humidity, gardening tools, and watering schedules. She watches numerous YouTube videos, reads several more articles, and joins Reddit communities about plant care.

Finally, she declared herself ready and visited the nursery.

After careful consideration, she brings home three tiny plants.

She introduces herself to them. Then names each one and delivers a heartfelt speech promising them a long, healthy, and prosperous life.

The plants are not very sure, and give nervous glances at each other.

A week passes. Everything is perfect. She checks the soil every few hours. Checks whether they are getting adequate sunlight. Waters them with absolute discipline.

She creates a plant care tracker on her productivity app. Naturally.

Two weeks later, she notices one leaf turning yellow.

Panic ensues.

Her search history looks like this:

“Plant yellowing causes”

“Overwatering plants yellowing leaves”

“Do plants recover from one yellowed leaf”

“How much sunlight is indirect sunlight”

“Is my plant going through distress”

“Does my plant secretly hate me”

Despite her best efforts, the inevitable happens soon after.

That plant dies.

The Bespectacled Girl is devastated. She proceeds to hold a small farewell ceremony. A tear or two might have been shed.

She spends the next few days mourning the loss before making a dramatic announcement to absolutely nobody.

“I am NEVER buying another plant. I cannot deal with this heartbreak again.”

She immediately shifts the rest of the surviving indoor plants outdoors alongside the others.

To her utter disbelief…

They thrive. They look greener, healthier, and full of life.

She is not sure whether to feel relieved or offended. Weren’t they supposed to be indoor plants? What is this behaviour?!

Deciding that she simply isn’t cut out for plant parenting, she makes a trip to the home decor store and buys several beautiful fake plants. At least they won’t die.

And accidentally waters one of them the next morning.

Nevermind.

A few weeks later…

She is back at the nursery. This time seemingly better prepared to be a plant mom. Again.

The plants know better.
