The Bespectacled Girl almost always has a song playing in her head.
No exaggerations.
The moment she wakes up.
While she gets ready for the day.
While she cooks.
While working.
While socialising.
While falling asleep.
She sometimes wonders if only she could remember genuinely important information the way she remembers song lyrics, she would have become a brilliant scholar.
Maybe.
Long drives aren’t just long drives to her.
More than deciding the route to the destination, she spends more time deciding which playlist deserves to play for the duration of the journey.
Never mind whether the fuel in the car is nearing empty.
Playlist selection is far more crucial.
Somehow after a great deal of analysis, she finds the perfect playlist.
The drive begins.
She stares dramatically out of the car window, imagining an alternate universe where she is the main character of a coming-of-age movie.
Wind in her hair. Music playing in the background. Lush greenery zipping past. Life feeling simply beautiful.
More often than not, this cinematic moment comes to an abrupt end.
Because she suddenly remembers…
She is the one driving the car.
“Focus. Focus. Eyes on the road. The daydreaming can wait”, she tells herself.
She sometimes transports herself into entirely fictional situations just by putting on her playlist, where she is running through the fields, walking gracefully in a long flowing dress.
While in reality, she is trying her best to avoid potholes while dragging two bags of groceries back home.
More than listening to music, what’s more important to her is creating playlists.
She does not understand the concept of liking a song and letting it exist.
Every song must belong in a playlist.
Leaving a song without assigning it to a playlist feels irresponsible and disrespectful.
She has a staggering number of playlists containing exactly one song.
It does not end there.
Her playlists have names that make sense to exactly one person: Her.
“Songs That Make Monsoons Feel Like Monsoons.”
“Songs That Give Me Main Character Feels.”
“Songs While Reading A Fiction Novel.”
“Songs While I Am Cleaning and Organising.”
It still does not end there.
Every playlist (even the ones with just one song) deserves a carefully designed cover image.
Nobody else will see them. Yet, they simply have to look right.
Music has a notorious track record of appearing at the worst possible moments in the her life.
Someone will be discussing quarterly reviews during an important work meeting. While everyone else is listening attentively, her brain has just decided to replay an old Bollywood song she listened to that morning.
She feels grateful that thoughts are not audible.
Then there are songs she does not even like. And yet, despite her brain’s library containing hundreds of songs she absolutely loves, it somehow chooses to play the ones she hates on an endless loop. For days.
Sometimes she plugs on her earphones.
A song begins.
A few moments later she realises she was not paying attention. She missed the vibes.
She proceeds to rewind it so that she can actually live the vibes.
Thirty seconds later, a housefly appears on the wall.
She gets distracted. The song ends. She missed the vibes. Again.
And she rewinds it. Again.

Eventually, after multiple rewinds, she manages to listen to the song from beginning the end.
Without distractions.
As intended.
Or maybe not.
The playlist knows better.
